Do Something This Weekend: Fort De Chartres Rendezvous

After you visit some Open Houses on Sunday, June 8, you can step back in time by checking out one of Illinois' most fascinating historic sites -- Fort De Chartres.

This weekend marks the 38th annual Rendezvous at the Fort.  In Colonial times, a Rendezvous was a Rendezvous at Fort de Chartresgathering of trappers and Native Americans who came together to trade goods and information.  The reenactors and traders who camp at the Fort during this annual event dress and live authentically while they are at the Rendezvous. Their trade goods are typical of the era they are interpreting -- in this case 1720 to 1820 -- and their camp sites reflect the conditions of the past.  (If they have modern conveniences, they must be hidden by period materials.)

In addition to shopping for jewelry, clothes, toys, pottery and art, you can watch the primative archery competition, listen to music and enjoy groups of dancers. La Grande Cannon Fusillade (the big cannon shootout) takes place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and an 18th century military demonstration will get underway at 2 p.m.

From Madison or St. Clair counties, take I-255 south to Route 3.  Continue south on Route 3 through Columbia, Waterloo and Red Bud. Follow the signs to the Fort. Learn more on the Fort's web site.
